India scored 149 at the end of 20 overs and the black caps won the match in the last ball of the match. Mac cullum scored a fine fifty that helped the black caps to win the match in a thrilling moment. New Zealand seals the series 2-0 in their home ground easily.

Hi all, India lose the first twenty 20 match against New zealand. After winning the toss, India elected to bat first. After providing a good start , India started losing wickets. Later Suresh Raina scored 67 that helped India to get 167 for the loss of 7 wickets at the end of over 20. Later New Zealand started it's innings slowly and reached victory with the help of mc cullum's good fifty. New Zealand won the first match with ease. Let's see whether India win the second one or not. Let us wait and see!

With the wonderful batting performance from sehwag and yuvi , India scored an amazing 363 which made India to win the match easily. Earlier India won the toss and elected to bat first. Sachin gone very early for 7 and then Gambhir followed him. India was 24 for 2 at a stage and then Yuvi and sehwag put a 221 run stand for the third wicket. Not surprisingly, most of the Australians dominate the list (27) while there is big difference from last year's edition is the addition of some 21 England players.

So each of the franchise has a maximum of US$2m to spend on their overseas signings in this auction, which gets underway on coming February 6, and it is likely that only about 16 players or two per franchise will be chosen out of these 112.

In the movie, which blends old video footage and TV interviews, Tyson talks about getting beaten up and stolen from when he was an overweight kid. He chokes up when reminiscing about his late trainer, Cus D'Amato, who transformed the troubled teenager into a world-class champion.

Tyson spares no details in describing his sex life, and covers his career's low points, like biting Evander Holyfield's ear in 1997. He admits to many, many bad decisions.

But on one issue, he still refuses to take responsibility. He insists he is innocent of the 1991 rape of an 18-year-old beauty queen for which he served three years in prison.

"I've been abusive to women before in my life," he acknowledged. But in this case, "I thought [the conviction] was wrong, I thought it was unfair."

Toback, who has known Tyson for 23 years and gave him small parts in "Black and White" and "When Will I Be Loved," said he talked to Tyson in a soothing, hypnotic voice to get him to open up for the film.

Bangalore Open begins Sept. 29 in mumbai

India - Bangalore will replace the country's financial capital of Mumbai when the ATP Tour holds a tennis tournament in India this year.

The ATP, the governing body for men's professional tennis, announced the switch Tuesday. The Mumbai event was hampered by heavy rain during its two years.

Bangalore, in the southern India, hosted the ATP World Doubles Championship in 2000. The tournament will be called the Bangalore Open and begin Sept. 29.

Indian tennis star MaheshBhupathi, whose company Globo sport is the promoter of the event, welcomed the ATP Tour's return to his hometown.

The NFL has officially notified its players union on Tuesday that it will opt out of the current collective bargaining agreement, which could lead to a season without a salary cap in 2010 and a possible lockout in 2011.

Owners had voted unanimously Tuesday morning to opt out of the deal, which was extended in March 2006. The NFL had until November to opt it out, but decided to do it early instead of waiting for the deadline.

Jimmie Johnson claimed his fourth pole of the season at California, and hopes it's a momentum boost going into the Chase.

The two-time reigning Cup champion was easily the fastest driver on the 2-mile oval in qualifying for Sunday's Pepsi 500, turning a fast lap of 180.397 mph.

"I'm really very proud of that lap," said Johnson, the defending race winner.

For much of the session, it appeared that the front row would be all Hendrick Motorsports, with Jeff Gordon sitting in the second spot with a lap of 179.565. But A.J. Allmendinger, one of nine drivers who had to qualify on speed, elbowed his way between the teammates with a lap of 179.659.

Kasey Kahne was fourth at 179.158, followed by Gillett Evernham Motorsports teammates Patrick Carpentier at 178.860 and Elliott Sadler at 178.492. Rounding out the top 10 were Martin Truex Jr. at 178.434, Dave Blaney at 178.381, Kurt Busch at 178.165 and rookie Aric Almirola at 178.134.

For Johnson, it was his first pole at the Southern California track, but the series-leading fourth of the season and the 17th of his career.

Heading into the penultimate race of the "regular season," Johnson is fourth in the season points. But, based on his two victories this year, he currently would be the third seed in the Chase, trailing only eight-time winner Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards, a six-time winner this season.

And Busch and Edwards have been the story lately, with Edwards winning three of the last four races and Busch turning in a win and a pair of runner-up finishes during the same span.

Johnson knows he has a lot of work to do if he is going to beat those two hot drivers once the Chase gets going. And a win here on Sunday would be a great way to gain some momentum.

"Yeah, it would mean a lot for us to win on a big track like this," Johnson said before his qualifying run. "Mile and a half and above tracks and downforce tracks have been kind of our weak spot.

"We've been making a lot of gains. Hopefully, we made some gains that will help us this weekend and moving into the Chase."

Josh Beckett was diagnosed with a strained right elbow

Josh Beckett was diagnosed with a strained right elbow and was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, retroactive to Aug. 18.

The announcement was made prior to the Red Sox's game Friday night against the Chicago White Sox. Tests on Beckett's elbow, taken during his visit with Dr. James Andrews on Friday, were clean, according to manager Terry Francona.

"I don't trust anybody more than I trust him when it comes to stuff like that. Just to go down there and hear it from him. It's something I needed to do, just to clear my mind," Beckett said. "He said my ligament looked fine. That's what I was afraid of. ... It was a big relief."

Francona said that if things progress, he expected Beckett to be ready next week for the series opener against the Rangers in Texas.

Kuznetsova, who clinched the 2004 title and was last year's runner-up, was the second big name to tumble out of the tournament in two days. Top seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia lost her second-round match on Thursday.

Traditional boxing powerhouse Cuba failed to win a gold medal, the first time that it hasn't won a gold medal in boxing since the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico. Cuba boycotted the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games.

Prior to Beijing 2008, several champion Cuban boxers pulled out of Cuba's Olympic squad. Despite having an inexperienced squad, Cuba still managed to win eight medals, including four silver medals.

"They (the Cuban boxing team) came here with no experience, and they've won eight medals. No gold, but nobody was expecting more than one or two medals at all for us. Now we have not only eight medals, but also a team with Olympic experience ready to start preparing for the next Olympics," said Cuba's boxing coach Pedro Roque.

While Cuba saw its boxing fortunes decline, China not only won its first-ever boxing gold medal, but it won two gold medals on the same day.

Before the Games had begun, light-flyweight Zou Shiming was expected to win his country's first-ever Olympic gold medal in the sport. Despite the intense pressure, Zou boxed well throughout the whole tournament, culminating in today's win against Mongolia's Serdamba Purevdorj in the final.

Zhang Xiaoping's gold medal in the light-heavyweight class came as a surprise. Zhang defeated Ireland's Kenny Egan in the final 11-7.

Despite Purevdorj's loss against Zou, Mongolia will be very happy at its performance. Apart from the silver medal in the light-flyweight class, the small Asian country also won a gold medal in the bantamweight class when Badar-Uugan Enkhbat defeated Yankiel Leon Alarcon of Cuba.

The other traditional boxing powerhouse that was conspicuously absent from the top of the podium was the United States, who only managed to win one medal – the bronze medal that Deontay Wilder won in the heavyweight class.

Lindsey Vonn was all smiles after adding the women's World Cup overall title to her downhill crown.

Vonn was assured of the win when she finished in the top 15 in the slalom and the only skier with a chance to catch her, Germany's Maria Riesch, failed to finish.

"It was amazing today," Vonn said. "I'm just really happy that it's over."

Bode Miller won his second overall title Thursday with a 12th-place finish in the super-G combined with Didier Cuche's announcement that he would not enter Saturday's season-ending slalom.

The last Americans to win both titles together were Phil Mahre and Tamara McKinney in 1983.

Vonn, who changed her last name from Kildow when she married former U.S. racer Thomas Vonn, became the second American woman to win the overall. She had already captured the season's downhill title.

Vonn lagged behind in 25th place after the first slalom run on Friday, but fought back with the fastest second run to finish 11th on the day, more than enough for the overall title.

"I was bummed out after the first run but I knew I had a good opportunity to charge in the second run and I kept charging and now I got some slalom points and won the overall," she said.

"It's amazing," Vonn said. "It was a tough day today with tough conditions but I just kept fighting and I took it."

Marlies Schild of Austria repeated as women's World Cup slalom champion by winning Friday's race, shortly after Vonn clinched the overall title.

Schild completed the two runs in a combined time of 1 minute, 52.78 seconds. Her nearest rival for the slalom title, Austrian teammate Nicole Hosp, finished fourth.

Veronika Zuzulova of Slovakia was second in 1:52.85, followed by Sarka Zahrobska of the Czech Republic in 1:53.02. Hosp, last season's overall winner, finished in 1:53.08.

For weeks, Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas has been targeting a March 2 return from knee surgery. On Saturday night, he conceded that he's not close to being ready to play.

"If I wanted it to be, it can be realistic," Arenas said of his original goal. "But, it's going to be longer to get into shape."

Arenas had surgery on his left knee Nov. 21 and has been rehabilitating it since, but he hasn't practiced with the team.

"I'm trying to get some rhythm back in my legs, get some cardio in. That's all I'm working on now," he said. "I have to get my body used to the floor again."

Arenas first had surgery on the knee last April, and was ready to play when the season began. After playing just eight games and averaging 22.4 points, his knee hurt again, and another operation was ordered.

Does he have another goal?

"It's hard to tell," Arenas said. "If I really want to get out there, I can play now, but are you going to get two good minutes out of me? Right now, it's about me trying to get my body into shape and ready to play again. That's where I'm at right now."

Meanwhile, All-Star forward Caron Butler remains out with a hip flexor strain. Butler has missed 11 of the past 13 games, and was examined by team physicians prior to Saturday's 110-95 win against Charlotte.

"He's not playing tonight. He's not ready to go," Washington coach Eddie Jordan said.

"No long-range plan right now. He's not ready to practice. We may even cut back on some of his extraneous rehabbing -- maybe calm him down a little more."

Prior to Saturday's win, Washington had lost 10 of 11 games, and Jordan says he's concentrating on the 10 players he's able to dress.

Needing to win just one more game to ensure a berth in the cricket tri-series final, India will seek to get the job done on Sunday itself as they go into their penultimate league match against Australia with the form of some key batsmen being a concern.

Sania Mirza's decision not to play in India came in for sharp criticism from stalwart Leander Paes , who said nobody is greater than the game and playing in front of own fans is the greatest joy for any player.

Paes, an eight time Grand Slam winner and India's current Davis Cup captain, said controversies are part and parcel of a sports -person's life and one has to learn to tackle it.

"Look at every celebrity; who does not have controversies? We all have adversities. Every celebrity has adversities in their lives. It's how dignified and honest you are. It's about how you project yourself and how you handle them," Paes said, reacting to Sania's decision to pull out of the Bangalore Open to avoid being dragged into fresh controversies.

Paes, who has an estranged relationship with Mahesh Bhupathi , whose Globosport company manages Sania, said no individual is greater than the game.

The high-profile Indian Premier League (IPL) on Thursday received an overwhelming response with some of India's top industrialists like Mukesh Ambani and Vijay Mallya and film stars Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta winning bids to own teams in the Twenty20 venture.

After prolonged suspense, BCCI vice president and Chairman of the IPL Governing Council Lalit Modi disclosed the names of the winning bidders, who shelled out staggering amounts to be owner of the city-based teams.

Reliance Industries chief Mukesh Ambani pipped Vijay Mallya to win the bid for the Mumbai team for $111.9 million.

The liquor baron, however, won the bid for the Bangalore team for $111.6 million.

Actor Shah Rukh Khan, joining hands with Juhi Chawla and Jay Mehta, won the bid for the Kolkata team for $75.09 million.

Fellow actor Preity Zinta and her boy friend Ness Wadia won the bid for the Mohali team for USD 76 million.

Among others, GMR Holdings won the bid for the Delhi team ($84 million), India Cements bagged the Chennai team ($91 million), Deccan Chronicle bid successfully for the Hyderabad ($107.01 million) outfit and Emerging Media won the bid for the Jaipur team for $67 million.

The bids of the ICICI, Sahara and Futures Group were disqualified, Modi said.

IRFAN PATHAN REWARDED

India’s Irfan Pathan has re-established himself as one of the most promising all-rounders in the game and in the process has made a big impact on the latest LG ICC Player Rankings following a match-winning performance against Australia in the third Test at Perth.

Returning to action after missing the Melbourne and Sydney Tests, the 23-year-old from Baroda scored 28 and 46 with the bat, claimed 5-117 in the match and in the process leapfrogged Australia’s Brett Lee and West Indies duo of Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo to sixth spot in the LG ICC Player Rankings for Test all-rounders.

Pathan has now set his sights on fifth-placed Chaminda Vaas of Sri Lanka as only eight points separate the two left-handers.

Andrew Symonds, Stuart Clark and Virender Sehwag also improve their all-rounders’ rankings. Symonds climbed two places to 12th position, Clark is up three spots to 15th position and Sehwag has rocketed eight places to 22nd.

India captain Anil Kumble, however, dropped out of the top 10 list after sliding two places to 11th position in the list that is still headed by South Africa’s Jacques Kallis.

Pathan also made the right movement in the LG ICC Player Rankings for Test bowlers when he climbed six places to join Kumble and injured Zaheer Khan in the top 20.

Pathan is now ranked in 19th spot and will be hoping for another good show at Adelaide that will help him to overtake Pakistan pair of Mohammad Asif and Danish Kaneria as well as New Zealand’s James Franklin. Only 24 ratings points separate 16th-placed Asif from Pathan who is now just three short of 100 Test wickets.

Pathan’s contributions with the bat in different batting positions and in difficult situations have also allowed him to improve his batting standing. He is now in 57th position in the LG ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen after rising seven places.

And Pathan is not the only player from Team India to make the upward movement.

In the batting charts, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Sehwag and Mahendra Singh Dhoni have all made improvements. Tendulkar and Dravid rose one position each and now sit on 13th and 15th positions respectively, Laxman climbed one place to 17th spot, Sehwag jumped three places to share 32nd place with Pakistan’s Kamran Akmal and England’s Marcus Trescothick while Dhoni lifted one place to share 41st spot with team-mate Wasim Jaffer.

Jaffer is one of the two Indian batsmen to lose ground with the other being former captain Sourav Ganguly. Ganguly dropped five places to fall out of the top 20 list and is now ranked 22nd while Jaffer slides one place to 42nd spot.

In the LG ICC Player Rankings for Test bowlers, Pathan’s new-ball partner RP Singh climbed three places to 29th position while Ishant Sharma jumped 18 places to 69th place.

Despite its first defeat in 17 Tests, there was some good news for Australia as well.

Fast bowler Clark was back in second place in the LG ICC Player Rankings for Test bowlers. The 32-year-old from New South Wales, who took 6-106 in the match, swapped places with South Africa’s Dale Steyn.

Brett Lee cemented his fourth position by achieving a career-best rating along with Clark while Mitchell Johnson improved his ranking by three places to 51st position, one ahead of Symonds who climbed four places and now sits on a career-high 52nd spot.

The bowling list is still headed by Sri Lanka’s Muthiah Muralidaran who is the only bowler currently beyond the magic 900-mark.

In the LG ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen, Australia’s captain Ricky Ponting’s slide continues and he has now dropped to fourth position after entering the series as the leading batsman.

Ponting’s failure to score heavily in this series has allowed Michael Hussey to rise to third for the first time in his career. Hussey is still qualifying for a full rating and because his provisional rating is exceptionally high, for a couple more innings he will be able to score relatively modestly and still move up. Batsmen qualify for full ratings when they have played 40 Test innings.

Symonds is the other Australia batsman to make the upward movement when he broke into the top 20 for the first time in his career. He climbs three places to sit on 18th position.

Besides that trio, Matthew Hayden, who is likely to bolster Australia after missing the Perth Test, is in sixth position, Michael Clarke stays in 12th spot and just 10 points adrift of South Africa’s Ashwell Prince in 11th place and Adam Gilchrist is on 23rd position.

The only other Australia batsman to lose ground along with Ponting is opener Phil Jacques who drops four places to 28th spot.

By virtue of its 72-run victory at Perth, India has assured itself a second place in the LG ICC Test Championship table behind Australia regardless of how the Adelaide Test pans out.

If the final Test is a draw, India will move two ratings points ahead of third-placed Sri Lanka and if Kumble’s side manages to square the series, it will finish on 113 ratings points, four ahead of Mahela Jayawardena’s side. Even if Australia wins the match in Adelaide, India will sit above Sri Lanka when ratings points are calculated beyond the decimal point.

India captain Anil Kumble showered rich tributes on Muttiah Muralitharan saying the ace off-spinner can scale the 1000-wicket mark in Tests.

Muralitharan became the world's highest wicket-taker in Tests on Monday when he took his tally to 709 wickets surpassing former Australia leg-spinner Shane Warne, who had 708 wickets to his credit.

"I spoke to him yesterday and told him he'll get to 1000," Kumble said.

The leggie said that Muralitharan had told him that even he could get 1000 wickets in Tests. However, Kumble, who currently has 578 wickets, said: "I'm not sure I can cross 1000."

The Indian captain pointed out to his unbelievable figures in Tests and said his strike rate is fantastic.

"It's a fantastic effort to get to 710 in the number of matches he has played. He's just picked up his 61st five-wicket haul and I told him I thought he'd get to a 100 (five-wicket hauls)," said Kumble.

Anil Kumble: No. I think it was something which we all wanted to achieve and I am really glad that you know the morning before was a bit nervous and uneasy going through. But then having achieved what we set up to I am really proud of the fact that we were able to do that.

Anil Kumble: Right on top. You know, all those victories that you mentioned were very special. In terms of the condition and in terms of the pitch, it suits the Aussies much better than anywhere in the world. So coming here to Perth and achieving the victory after what the team had been through, is something very special.

Gaurav Kalra: Now you spoke about the pitch, Anil. There was a lot of talk about it. Of course, all of us in the media tend to think we are experts on wickets and we understand all of the business on wickets. But here it seems it become even more exaggerated to the talk about the Perth pitch. How did you manage to psyche a young bowling attack about the spot and also to keep the batsmen focused?

Anil Kumble: I think, you know, the most important thing is like you mention, the media certainly psyche the visiting team regarding Perth, regarding the pitch and every thing that comes along. So in that sense it was important to keep focus on. And the focus was on to get us a victory in Perth. Because that would certainly ensure that we stay in series. And so, yes, that was the focus.

Gaurav Kalra: And now, was there a focus on not to read newspapers?

Anil Kumble: No, not really. I am someone who doesn’t really bother about you know, what comes in the newspapers and it doesn’t affect me. I mean, having played this long, you love to go though newspapers and see what kind of comments are there. But you know, that does not really, I can switch on or switch off something which I can do. Yes, that was the message across to all the players not to get too involved in what comments come along. But, you know, personally I don’t get of it.

Muralitharan slams 'miserable' Warne

Muttiah Muralitharan has lashed out at Shane Warne, calling him a "miserable man" and declaring he would not speak to Warne at the unveiling of the new trophy that bears their names. Muralitharan was angered by Warne's suggestion that the ICC should have Muralitharan's bowling action analysed during a Test match, despite the fact he has repeatedly passed laboratory tests.

"I am very disappointed with what he said," Muralitharan told the Sydney Morning Herald. "He can't keep his mouth shut because he wants to keep making these comments. He must be a miserable man in his life. But that is his opinion and there is nothing I can do about it."

Warne is the world's leading Test wicket-taker with 708 victims but Muralitharan needs only seven more to overtake him and that could happen in the second Test, which starts in Hobart on Friday. The rift comes at an awkward time after the two champions were honoured with the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy, which will be held by the winner of the Australia-Sri Lanka Test series and will be unveiled by the pair on Thursday.

"Maybe he just doesn't want me to pass his record," Muralitharan said. "Why else would he keep saying these things? I will shake his hand [at the ceremony] and go straight off the field instead of trying to be friendly."

Warne wrote in his News Ltd column on Tuesday that checking Muralitharan's action during a match would offer "peace of mind" to everybody in world cricket and "surely Murali would want that". The comments came after a newspaper article on the weekend in which Warne's mentor, Terry Jenner, floated the idea of in-match testing for Muralitharan.

"Terry Jenner played cricket a long time ago and cricket is very different now," Muralitharan said. "So it doesn't matter what he says. But Jenner and Warne are still always commenting, commenting, commenting. It makes them feel important."

Muralitharan told the paper he and Warne were not on good terms before these latest problems, as he believed Warne considered Muralitharan had collected too many cheap Test wickets against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. Although 163 of Muralitharan's Test victims have been Zimbabwe or Bangladesh players, he also has an outstanding record against England and South Africa and says he can only play whoever Sri Lanka is scheduled to face.

Muralitharan said he had no comment about the decision to use his name alongside Warne's on the new trophy. "That was the decision between the boards of Sri Lanka and Australia," he said. "I cannot say anything else."

KC IBHRAHIM DIED AT 88

KC Ibrahim, who played four Tests for India against West Indies in 1948-49, has died at his home in Karachi. He was 88 and at the time of his death was India's oldest living Test player.

He made his Test debut in the first match of the 1948-49 series at home to West Indies, his sheer weight of runs the previous summer making him an automatic pick. Opening with Vinoo Mankad, he scored 85 and 44, but in his next six innings he made only 40 runs and he had retired by the time England toured in 1951-52.

Ibrahim's Mumbai team-mate, Madhav Mantri, said he was "a solid player and one who believed in staying at the wicket for as long as possible." He captained the Mumbai side that won the Ranji Trophy in 1947-48 and Mantri described him as "a fine captain, someone who believed in backing his players."

A top-order batsman who sometimes opened, Ibrahim made his first-class debut in 1938-39 and from 1941-42 onwards scored heavily in domestic cricket. He began that season with an unbeaten 230 and ended with 117 in Bombay's innings win in the Ranji Trophy final.

He reached his peak in 1947-48 when he scored 1171 runs at 167.29, including four hundreds, a record that won him the Indian Cricketer of the Year award for the season. He started the season with scores of 218*, 36*, 234*, 77* and 144, a total of 709 runs without being dismissed. In the last three innings of the previous season his scores had been 2, 2 and 4. He moved to Karachi in 1950 and that marked the end of his first-class career.

He was in poor health for the last few years of his life. During India's 2006 tour to Pakistan, a couple of journalists went to visit him. One of them, Jasvinder Sidhu, from the Hindi daily Amar Ujala, remembers: "He didn't want us to photograph him. He said, 'I don't want my friends in Bombay and Delhi to see my current state. Tell them I'm fine.'"

GAMBHIR AND AFRIDI GET INTO A HEATED ARGUMENT

Kanpur: India vice-captain Yuvraj Singh played a dominating knock of 77 runs and took one wicket to guide India to a 46-run victory against Pakistan in the third One-Day International here at the Green Park Stadium on Sunday.

Put into bat by the visitors, Yuvraj, who was adjudicated the man of the match, hit the ball hard for the big shots along with aggressive running between the wickets to guide India to a competitive total of 294 for 6.

In reply Pakistan folded up for 248 in 47.2 overs.

The left-handed batsman, who was in devastating form, sent the visitors on a leather hunt and then bowled well to help India take a 2-1 lead in the five-match ODI series.

He also shared a solid 100-run partnership with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni who hit a cavalier 49 off 52 balls.

For Pakistan, the highlight was Salman Butt’s sparkling innings of 129 runs from 142 balls studded with 17 fours. But it couldn’t translate into a win as Pakistan kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

Butt fought a lone battle on his way to his 4th ODI century against India playing some fine strokes in the process but didn’t get enough support from the other end.

In company of Misbah-ul-Haq, he tried to keep his team in the hunt by sharing a solid 80-run partnership but the required run-rate kept on mounting.

The loss of three top-order batsmen – Afridi, Younis Khan, Mohammad Yousuf – pushed Pakistan right on the back foot.

The tourists were always fighting a lost battle with no specialist batsmen to take charge in the slog overs.

India opened the bowling with R P Singh, and Irfan Pathan who got the breakthrough claiming the wicket of the hero of the last match played here in 2005.

Shahid Afridi, who opened the innings with Butt, tried to hit one shot too many and perished for 12.

The wickets of Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf gave India the much-needed impetus. The three pacers bowled with control; Zaheer Khan, who had a rather forgettable game at Mohali, returned with commendable figures (25 for 1 in seven overs).

Runs dried up when Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh were introduced into the attack.

The target got stiffer as Pakistan were up against an asking rate of 10 in the last twelve runs. Eventually they fell short by 46 runs.

INDIAN INNINGS

Earlier, the openers, Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, got away with some streaky edges and largely struggled against the pace of Shoaib Akhtar and Umar Gul.

Pakistan, as their wont, were sloppy on the field and missed a few catches. To start with wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal dropped an easy catch of Ganguly on the very first ball of the match off Shoaib Akhtar, followed by Tendulkar getting a life off the bowling of Umar Gul when Misbah-u-Haq failed to get his hands to the ball.

After the initial jitters, India’s most successful opening pair found their touch as they went after the bowling. Ganguly was the first one to take the initiative as he charged down to hit a six of Gul over long-on. Though Gul extracted swing, the Indian opening duo took him on. India’s most reliable opening pair shared a stand of 68 in just over ten overs.

Sohail Tavir was introduced into the attack as the first change and that did the trick for Pakistan. He bowled with control and stifled the scoring rate and soon snared both the openers.

Tanvir induced an edge off the little master and this time Akmal took a fine catch behind the stumps. A few overs later he bowled Ganguly for 39 (46 balls, 4x4, 1x6); at that stage the Bengal southpaw was going great guns. Tanvir finished with 2 for 26.

Thereafter, some tight bowling by the Pakistanis kept Gautam Gambhir and Yuvraj Singh quiet for some time. Abdur Rehman, who replaced Rao Iftikhar, scalped Gambhir. The Delhi southpaw continuing his rich form looked good but failed to get a big one at Kanpur.

Skipper Mahnedra Singh Dhoni and deputy Yuvraj Singh took their time to settle down while Pakistan bowlers maintained a disciplined line.

Yuvraj subsequently released the pressure by spanking two sixes Abdur Rehman. Dhoni doubled the joy for India, biffing two more sixes off Shoaib Malik in the very next over.

Shahid Afridi and Abdur Rehman started leaking runs, with the former conceding 57 in 7 overs. Rehman too was expensive giving away 58 in his 7 overs.

Targeting the spinners both these batsmen went for their shots taking India past the 250 mark.

But Dhoni fell to Shoaib Akhtar, one run short of his fifty. Later Rehman claimed the wicket of danger-man Yuvraj who fell for a well-made 77 off 95 balls, hitting 4 fours and 3 sixes.

India maintained a high run rate even as they lost wickets towards the death. Irfan Pathan lit up the run riot in the last two overs scoring 17 runs off just 7 balls.

INDIA AND PAK FINED FOR SLOW OVER RATE

India and Pakistan cricket teams have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during their second one-day international at Mohali on Thursday. International Cricket Council (ICC) match referee Roshan Mahanama imposed the fines after both the teams were ruled to be one over short of their targets when time allowances were taken into consideration, a spokesman for the ICC said on Friday.

In accordance with the ICC Code of Conduct regulations governing over-rate penalties, players are fined five percent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount. “As such, rival captains Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Shoaib Malik have been fined 10 percent of their match fee while their players have each received five percent fines,” the spokesman added.

He said Mahanama spoke to both captains after the match and reminded them of their sides’ obligations to complete their overs in the time allocated in the futur

Selectors are muppets headed by a joker' - Atapattu

Marvan Atapattu launched an astonishing attack on the Sri Lankan selectors, calling them a set of muppets headed by a joker. His statements came at the end of the third day of the first cricket Test against Australia at the Gabba, with Sri Lanka fighting to stave off a heavy defeat.

"Sri Lanka cricket at this moment of time is not going in the direction it should be going, especially with a set of muppets headed by a joker. I don't give credit to the way they have handled selections," Atapattu said at the end-of-play press conference.

"If they had handled selections properly we should have a good back-up team. For some reason we don't and at the age of 37-38 people have to come and play for Sri Lanka when it comes to tough tours like this. If selectors are there only for going on tours and getting perks it is a waste of time."

Atapattu had not been originally picked by the selectors in the team to tour Australia and was only included after a request made by Sri Lanka's sports minister Gamini Lokuge.

Sri Lanka's national selection committee comprises Ashantha de Mel (chairman), Don Anurasiri, Ranjith Madurasinghe and Jayantha Seneviratne.

Atapattu, returning to Test cricket after nearly two years and international cricket after a traumatic six months, top scored for Sri Lanka with a patient 51 in the first innings and stitched a 53-run opening partnership with Sanath Jayasuriya in the second after Sri Lanka had been forced to follow on.

Atapattu also said people were trying to create an impression of disunity within the team. "We are a happy dressing room at the moment. A section of people has been trying to say that it is divided, but it is not so. We don't have problems inside the dressing room but people from outside are trying to create unpleasantness through the media and by statements made by ex-cricketers to displease us. I don't think they have succeeded," said Atapattu who turns 37 on November 20.

Commenting on the day's play Atapattu said: "We didn't do justice to our talents and the potential we had in the dressing room in the first innings. We got some good balls early in the innings but that's not a good enough excuse. It is much easier batting in the second innings.

"There is only the invariable bounce that you got to be worried of. We should be able to get a good partnership or two going tomorrow and hopefully be in a better position."

Atapattu said facing Brett Lee was always a challenge to any batsman in the world. "I really enjoy facing him. Each delivery is a different challenge that you have to face."

I DEDICATE MY CENTURY TO WOOLMER-YOUNIS

It was Younis Khan’s excellent batting that saw Pakistan level the five-match ODI series against India as the tourists successfully chased down 322 with one ball to spare.

It was undoubtedly, one of the best knocks in Younis Khan's career and he choose to dedicate it to his late coach Bob Woolmer.

"I want to dedicate my century to Bob Woolmer. The way he worked with us for so long was commendable. He always wanted me to do this. This is for him," said Younis after the second One-Dayer.

Elaborating on his brilliant innings off 117 off 110 balls, studded with nine fours and two sixes, Younis said modestly, "I can’t hit big shots so I score through reverse sweep and stuff like that. I have to steal my shots as I am not a big hitter of the ball, like Misbah or Afridi."

The day that saw about 640 runs being scored on a good track, the Pakistan vice-captain said that his team was always confident of chasing India's total.

"We always knew that we had a chance. Had India posted some 340 plus runs, it would have been a problem. But we knew that they had been 20-30 runs shorter and one big innings would get us nearer to the target. And we knew our middle-order was good and we had to give last 6-7 overs to Afridi," said Younis, who hit his third ODI century career in Mohali.

But he disagreed that it was him or Afridi who turned it around for Pakistan.

Giving credit to pacer Umar Gul, the 29-year-old said, "On this wicket, 350 would have been a huge ask. So I would say that Umar Gul’s second spell proved crucial. Getting the breakthroughs in the form of both the set batsmen - Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir at the right time did the trick for us. Had those two been there the score would have automatically accelerated to 350. And chasing another 20-30 runs would have been difficult."

Younis, meanwhile, refused to term Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s decision to bat first after winning the toss as a wrong one.

"The decision to bat first was a brave one and it was a positive decision. I don’t think there was anything wrong in that. They failed to get their partnership going in the middle and that ultimately went against them. Shoaib and Gul bowled really well in their second spell to restrict the Indians."

On the panel to debate the issue was former cricketer and chief selector Kiran More, member of the editorial board of DNA Ayaz Memon and Pakistan Cricket Board spokesperson Ehsan Malik.

A decade ago, writer Mike Marqusee gave the title to his book that the Indo-Pak cricket is like war being fought without weapons. Does that comment still hold?

“Sport is supposed to be a substitute for war. But I would underplay this war metaphor where India-Pakistan cricket is concerned. In ’61, when Haneef Mohammed came to Bombay, his hand was slashed by a fan, in ‘89 Shreekanth was attacked in by fans in the Karachi stadium but a lot has changed since then. In 2004, the Indian team and fans could go all over Lahore with the Indian flag, which was unthinkable before and the Pakistan team in ‘98 got a standing ovation in Chennai. So the players have played each other a lot so it has become a far more open environment,” said Ayaz Memom.

Sporting war?

The fact is whenever Indo-Pak relations at a political and diplomatic level have hit a low, it has always been cricket that has been used as an platform to vent feelings.

“It was earlier so but not anymore. I think the media has done a great job. Even the Captains the teams have had in the recent past have not been very aggressive. Inzamam-ul-Haq, for example, and Shoib Malik have been great regarding building relations,” said Kiran More.

Could it be that since the average age of the team has come down, we see less of on-field tantrums?

“I would not like to disagree to that but there are more important reasons for it. I agree with Ayaz and Kiran that it can’t be called war. There is such an intensity because in both the countries, cricket is more than passion, it’s almost a religion,” said Ehsan Malik.

T-20 defeat is history

The Pakistan cricket team arrived in Delhi later on Thursday for five one dayers and three Test matches.

Talking to the reporters, Pakistan skipper Shoaib Malik said that Twenty20 World Cup defeat against India is history and whichever team would handle pressure better will win the forthcoming series.

Alleging there is no tension between the two teams, he said Indian team is in great form, especially Yuvraj Singh.

Malik called cricket between India and Pakistan enjoyable and said his team wants the most of it.

He also said he had no problems with the senior players in his team, who give him their cooperation.

Frontline seamer Asif not in team

Unfortuntely for Pakistan, they are without their frontline seamer Mohammad Asif, who is most likely to miss the entire one day series due to continuing problems with his elbow.

Asif missed the recent one-day series against South Africa due to the same injury, after breaking down while bowling in the second Test against the Proteas at the Gaddafi Stadium last month.

The pacer had earlier undergone an MRI scan, and the report wasn't very encouraging.

An official confirmation of Asif's pull out is expected later in the day. The PCB hasn't announced any replacement so far.

Sri Lanka topple Warne's All-Stars at Hong Kong Sixes

An All-Stars team containing some of the greatest names in world cricket was beaten in the final of the Hong Kong Sixes on Sunday by a team of little-known Sri Lankans.

Over two days of carnival cricket, the All-Stars - featuring captain Shane Warne, Brian Lara, Glenn McGrath and Anil Kumble - had produced explosive cricket in the tournament's unique five-overs-an-innings format.

But their run of success came to end when the young Sri Lankans refused to be intimidated and posted 127 for three after five eight-ball overs, a total that proved too much for their illustrious opponents, who made 111 to lose by 16 runs.

Also in the All-Stars squad were Zimbabwe's Heath Streak, England's Geraint Jones and Craig McMillan of New Zealand, who won the man of the tournament award for his brutal batting, though he went for a golden duck in the final.

Sri Lanka's surprise star was captain Indika De Saram who, under the Sixes' quirky rules, scored 40 in the final after returning to the wicket having earlier retired not out for 32.

Kaushalya Weeraratne (32) and Jeewantha Kulatunga (28) also helped carry the side to its first-ever Hong Kong Sixes victory, which brought with it a winners' cheque of $100,000.

In the All-Stars' final innings, Test cricket's top scorer Brian Lara reminded the crowd of his glory days with four sixes lofted over the hospitality marquees.

Geraint Jones, currently out of favour for the England wicketkeeper role, was a late call-up but his fielding caught the eye and in the final he scored three huge sixes off his first three balls.

Former Australian strike bowler Glenn McGrath was on the subs bench for the title-decider after dislocating a finger while fielding earlier in the day.

The weekend saw nine national teams compete against the All-Stars in 21 matches that lasted fewer than 45 minutes each.

With the game's big hitters letting loose at the tiny Kowloon Cricket Club, 275 sixes were scored and at least 40 balls were lost.

England, who fielded Twenty20 specialist Darren Maddy and rising star Luke Wright, fell in the quarter-finals.

India had earlier crashed out at the qualifying stage to the disappointment of their vocal supporters and the Sixes' organisers, who are keen to boost the event's TV audience in the massive south Asia market.

New Zealand and Pakistan were the losing semi-finalists. Shane Warne, 38, said he had enjoying playing alongside some old friends and rivals.

"This has been my first Sixes and it has been a great couple of days. After we won the first few games, we really wanted to win the whole thing.

Argentina have moved up one place to go top of the FIFA rankings for October, released by world football's ruling body on Wednesday.

World Cup champions Italy fell two places to third, while Brazil leapfrogged them into second place.

Beaten finalists in Germany last year, France jumped two spots to move up to fourth place while the Germans drop one place to fifth.

But the big losers in October were England, who fell to 11th place after their recent poor showings in Euro-2008 qualifiers.
